Dominica (Pronounced Dom-in-ee-ka) is an independent island nation in the eastern Caribbean, and not to be confused with the Dominican Republic/Haiti/Hispaniola. Although Dominica's chief export is bananas, it also has a local brand of products, Bello, that includes a great hot sauce that blends Scotch bonnet peppers, papaya, and spices. Needless to say, we brought a few bottles back with us.
We first visited Dominica on our Honeymoon in May, 1999. We snorkeled, birdwatched, and toured the fascinating interior of the island: steep mountains, rainforest, banana plantations, waterfalls, and freshwater lakes.
On our return trip in January 2006, our main activity was SCUBA diving. We made 20 dives, mostly on the southwestern end of the island. On our last diving day, we made a few dives on the middle west coast. The east coast, as with most Caribbean islands, faces the Atlantic Ocean and is too rough to dive.
The reefs of Dominica are plentiful with sponges and with crinoids, an ancient relative of the starfish that is very photogenic and has 20-40 feathery arms that it uses to comb the water for food. Karen took the underwater shots for this trip.
